Where did it begin?

Our founder won a Rotary Foundation Scholarship in 1982, to study Bioengineering. The full funding of his scholarship came from a Rotary club in South Africa. (Rotary is about building cross border relationships and the sharing of skills and expertise, for the benefit of mankind.) This small Rotary club in South Africa, spent their money at the University of Utah. A condition of the Scholarship was that the recipient had to return to his native country (and with what he had learned, benefit the world). Our founder has certainly fulfilled this responsibility and has contributed significantly to multiple Rotary projects, and been awarded the “Paul Harris fellowship” in recognition of his service.

Overall Philosophy

Southern is a global company. Southern has a philosophy of supporting and giving back, to the countries that are fundamental to the success of the company.

Why is most of the engineering done in South Africa?

The company is all about improved and advanced treatment solutions, often requiring niche products. South African Dental Specialists were one of the first groups trained by PI Branemark, in the early eighties. This pioneering group faced greater challenges than their Northern Hemisphere counterparts. This drove them to be innovative, and obsessed with improving patient outcomes. They conceived innovative solutions. These would not have realized, had it not been for our engineer, founder, who could develop the associated products and protocols.

Southern Implants is surrounded by 3 Dental schools, and the private practices of many of the original innovators. Even though new innovations are being conceived by our global KOL’s, these pioneers and Dental Schools have such a close working relationship with the company, that the global conceived treatments can be trailed, optimized, and brought to market in significantly reduced time relative to industry norm.

The bulk of the production is done in South Africa, creating about 200 production jobs. The production methods that Southern has chosen, are labor intensive. This is because we believe that we can make a better products by doing it in this way. Our Q300 quality system is integral to a large labor force.

What is different about our Sales & Distribution?

Due to the complexity of Southern products, and the profile of our users, there has to be extensive technical support. There also has to be a much larger inventory than is customary in this industry (due to site and protocol specific implants).
